Andrew Biezard will be at the Church of St. Thomas More (65 East 89th St, NYC) to talk about the differences in Islam and Catholicism.  He has been conducting educational seminars on Islam since 2007, speaks Arabic, and has a Master’s Degree from Hartford Seminary in Islamic Studies.

Taking place right in the heart of NYC, in downtown SoHo, this weekly social discussion forum for young adults in their 20’s and 30’s, will inspire them to grow in their understanding of love and flourish in their relationships. The primary text for discussion will be “Men, Women and the Mystery of Love: Practical Insights from John Paul II’s Love and Responsibility” by Dr. Edward Sri.

In an age of confusion, the needs of young adults often go unmet. Relationships begin and end with arbitrary ease, hearts are broken, and the most common piece of advice is the old adage, “Just do what feels right”.

It will be held at 32 Prince St at the outdoor setting at 7:30pm. In case of bad weather, we have a rain venue at 263 Mulberry st (just around the corner).

Bring friends and coworkers, it’ll be a great night out! We’ll also be heading after to a place nearby for food and drinks.

The 4th week for Love and Responsibility in NYC saw – again – well over 80+ people turn up for a fun and engaging discussion in SoHo under the stars!

MANILA, July 13, 2010— Pope Benedict XVI will be writing for the first handwritten Bible created by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Biblical Apostolate (CBCP-ECBA) in collaboration with the Philippine Bible Society (PBS).

The Holy Father will be writing verses of the first and last chapter of the Bible, that is Genesis 1.1 and Revelation 22.21.

The first handwritten Bible intends to create Bible responsiveness and to cultivate love for the Word of God among different sectors in the country.

Organizers said the creation of this Bible is a response to the12th Synod of Bishops and the forthcoming Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Benedict XVI.

The May They Be One handwritten Bible will be divided into two columns. The first column will be the English version while the second column will be in the vernacular. Eight native languages such as Tagalog, Ilocano, Pangasinan, Cebuano, Hiligayon, Samarenyo, Bicol and Pampango will be used in separate editions.

The 35,656 verses from the 78 books of the bible will be written by hand by representatives from various sectors such as the Church, urban/rural poor, OFWs, youth, farmers, government offices like Malacañang, Senate, and Congress; schools, indigenous people, and the fisher folks.

Meanwhile, Roman Catholic and Protestant Bishops will be tasked to author the passages of Genesis 1 and Revelation 22.

The English version of the handwritten passages will be based from the published Catholic editions of the Old and New Testaments while the different languages will be copied from the Popular Versions or the New Testament Books of the Philippine Bible Society (PBS). (Kate Laceda)

Barbie sets up

“True Love Waits.” That line might sound corny, but it’s an important truth our youth need to hear.

Consider this: Everyday they are bombarded with trendy messages telling them that if something feels good then it must be morally good. They are told that sex is fun, and that you don’t have to face its consequences as long as you have “safe” sex. No wonder then that so many of them engage in it before they are ready and — when contraceptives fail as they eventually will — they have to grow up quickly because of new, unexpected responsibilities.

Or, worse, they may end up murdering the innocent, unborn fruit of their indiscretion through abortion.

Is sex education the answer, as the proponents of the RH Bill say? Not if it just encourages more promiscuous behavior and even more health and social problems.

Fortunately, there is a viable, truly life-saving and life-changing alternative: education in purity and life values.

That is exactly what True Love Waits (TLW) Philippines (http://wagmuna.com and http://www.tlw.ph) is trying to do. The movement, which is affiliated with LifeWay Student Ministry, has a four-fold purpose (taken from the TLW Philippines website):

• GUIDE young people to make a commitment to sexual abstinence until marriage.
• GIVE young people who have made a commitment to abstinence a chance to reaffirm that promise and challenge other young people to do so.
• GUIDE parents of young people to make or reaffirm a commitment to Godly standards of sexual behavior and model a life committed to sexual purity.
• GIVE adults a tangible way to affirm and encourage young people who make a commitment to sexual abstinence until marriage.

Now that’s a whole lot better than teaching kids how to use condoms!

This month, on May 15, TLW will be conducting a Purity Conference Strategic Planning Session. The event will be held at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City, from 9:00AM to 12:00 noon, and is for teachers, guidance counselors, leaders of youth organizations, and just about anyone else who wants to help organize the upcoming Purity Mega Event to be held on September 19, 2009, called UNASHAMED Cebu. Entrance is FREE.

Derek Ross, the group’s national Director, will be in Cebu to meet with interested parties at the planning conference and even afterwards. Derek’s a Texan, married with five kids, and likes to refer to himself as “Zaido, Pulis Pangkalokohan!” Yeah, I know. Don’t ask me where he got that one.

Barbie gives her testimony

I attended the UNASHAMED Purity Conference held at the Mega Tent in Pasig last February. It was meaty, straightforward, and did not beat around the bush. It gave the participants straight talk on issues that matter in their lives, and did it all with a good dose of fun and humor. At the end we were treated to some good live music. I had the privilege and pleasure to see Barbie (of Barbie’s Cradle) perform again. She’s such a beautiful, blessed, and talented lady. Her testimony touched me as I’m sure it touched so many others. This is something your kids (and even you) shouldn’t miss.

The Filipino Community is a fast growing ethnic group at St. Joseph Parish. We also attract a lot of our friends and relatives from our nearby parishes and sometimes from all over the state. Everyone who had the chance to worship and socialize with us simply find themselves to be among friends.

Being here for over six years, I have seen for myself how the parish has evolved. I belileve it is now time for us to be familiar with each other and since you all attend different Mass times.

One notable fact is the high ratings coming from the Asians/Pacific Islanders (majority the Filipino community).

ST. JOSEPH PARISH offers MIDNIGHT MASS on Christmas Eve. During my younger days in the province where i gew up, I always look forward for the Midnight Mass because I know, for kids lilke me, the better portion of that follows after mass, which is the Media Noche. (Media Noche – “Midnight” for Christmas and Noceh Buena – New Night for New Year).

For Filipinos living near St. Joseph Church in Maplewood who still want to relive the Midnight Mass Filipino Tradition, you are most celebrate Christmas Eve Mass with us at Midnight of December 24. (What time? of course, 12:00 Midnight. funny, right?) Invite your friends and families. Last Year, Midnight Mass of 2007, there is quite a good number of Filipinos who came to our Midnight Mass. Let’s continue the tradition.
