San Lorenzo Ruiz is an altar server himself as a boy at the convent of Binondo Church. It is only befitting, if we are to follow his example, to experience serving on this blessed ministry.
To be an Altar Server is not only to serve the priest by helping him preside over the liturgy but to serve the congregation by helping everyone to worship and celebrate in the best way possible. It is first and foremost a service to our Lord; an opportunity to take an essential role in the most sacred celebration of our Catholic Faith.
Responsibilities include leading the processional of the cross, candles, incense and thurible during special mass celebrations; assisting the priest in receiving the gifts of bread, wine and other offerings; preparing the chalice and cruets; and performing special tasks during the Consecration of gifts.
I am no longer a boy but a young adult here in New York and I must tell you how rewarding it is to serve during Mass. It is never too late. Serving during Mass gives us the opportunity to participate more fully in the most blessed celebration of our Faith. It allows us to understand what it means to serve in our own little way with the dignity of a true gentleman. Suffice it to say that Holiness begins in that little surrender of our time and effort in order to yield to that higher calling of giving ourselves in to the service of the Lord.
With hopes and prayers I invite you, all gentlemen, to share on this blessed ministry, to support our Filipino priests in the New York City area as Altar Servers.
While we will always go where we are needed (i.e. serving non-Filipino priests) we would like to begin our service to our Filipino priests here in New York. Please let me know if you are interested and I will send you information about the next orientation and training.
